Government response to consultation on proposals for the introduction of a maximum stake limit for online slots games in Great Britain GOV UK

Mr Vegas has an impressive selection of jackpot slots, including WowPot games like the atmospheric Wheel of Wishes and a variety of Mega Moolah titles. Stake limits for online slots are only one part of the wider package of regulatory and legislative changes which is intended to create an appropriate balance. Alongside the GGY reduction, there will be some other costs to operators, such as the implementation costs of game development teams needing to test and deploy a stake limit on live games. After considering the consultation responses, we have decided to introduce a stake limit of £2 per spin for young adults aged 18 to 24. 29% of consultation respondents selected Option C (a stake limit for young adults aged 18 to 24 that is consistent with the limit for all adults but with extra operator vigilance). A £5 limit aligns with the stake limit for B1 machines in casinos which we believe to be the most comparable land-based gambling environment in terms of risk.

• We take a different approach and only recommend online casinos we actually use week in, week out.
• You can immerse yourself in ancient civilizations like Ancient Egypt, enjoy Irish-themed games, or go for slots based on famous TV series or movies.

We see players exploring new slots online right here at Pink Casino because of the introduction of new hard-hitting features, jackpot prizes, and features that make up many of our casino games. A few respondents highlighted the need for appropriate monitoring and evaluation of stake limits for online slots games and called for further evidence in this area. After careful consideration, the government has decided to introduce a maximum stake limit of £5 per spin for online slots games for adults aged 25 and above. We have committed to introducing a maximum stake limit for online slots games to minimise the risk of runaway or rapid losses which can contribute significantly to gambling-related harm. Many of the 16,000 call for evidence respondents addressed this issue, and specifically supported the introduction of a maximum stake limit for online slots games. As the response and the SI set out, the stake limits are for online slots only and do not apply to other casino games, such as roulette or blackjack.

A. Players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 per spin. Online slots should always be about entertainment. See every recent release in our new slots section. We add new slots to the lobby every week.

For customers who are aged 18 to 24, the maximum they can stake per game cycle for online slots is £2. For customers who are aged 25 and older, the maximum they can stake per game cycle for online slots is £5. “stake” means to pay or risk an amount in connection with an online slots game. “game cycle” means, for an online slots game, the period beginning with the initiation of a game by the individual and ending at the point at which all money staked during the game has been lost or all money won during the game has been delivered to or made available for collection by the individual as the case may be.

Following publication of the consultation document, we received further information from operators on how staking patterns vary for young adults aged 18 to 24 and the frequency at which all adults stake over a certain level. Stakes over £5 comprised 0.06% of all spins and stakes over £20 comprised just 0.02% of all spins. However, it also found that even players identified as high-risk play mainly at low stakes. This includes academic research, parliamentary reports, and findings from the stake limit cut on B2 machines (fixed odds betting terminals) in 2019. This measure is designed to work together with the wider package of policies in the white paper, including financial risk checks, data sharing on high-risk customers, and making online games safer by design. Following this transition period, if operators are unable to develop solutions to adequately distinguish between customers who are 25 and over and those who are under 25, the expectation is that they will not be able to offer any customers stakes exceeding £2 per spin.

To inform the consultation and consultation stage impact assessment, DCMS formally requested data from leading operators. This highlighted the overrepresentation of customers identified as high risk among high stakers, although this data could not explore the cause of such overrepresentation. In addition to the views and evidence provided through the consultation, DCMS has considered a wider body of background information to guide decision making. Parts 1 to 4 of this document sets out respondent views and evidence on each section of the consultation before outlining the government response and intended action in each area.

One of my favourite things about The Border is the Cluster Wins, which was purposefully designed to help you progress by using its features. This is especially true when a player plays a low-risk strategy or plays for extended periods. It is important to avoid increasing your bet when you are impatient because waiting for the trigger will ultimately lead to better bonuses and a much more rewarding multiplier progression. The multipliers drop frequently enough that even a fairly poor bonus could potentially give you a decent return on your bet amount. I also love how, with Sweet Bonanza, most of the time, the bonuses give you some kind of return rather than all-or-nothing. You may need to have some patience in order to finally be able to hit the expanding symbol, but when you eventually do, it completely changes the mood, and the play session turns around very quickly.

During the course of the Gambling Act Review and the specific consultation on online slots, government ministers and officials have continued to engage extensively with a range of stakeholders through roundtables, workshops and technical discussions on the proposals. This data covered over 70 billion spins placed during the financial year to March 2023, increasing our understanding of current staking patterns for online slots. We prioritise games from established providers with proven track records. I check whether RTP figures are displayed clearly within the game itself or lobby listing. I start off by looking at the tech behind the slots. A lot of slot review sites just have a glance at a slot site’s payment methods and take the casino’s processing times at face value, not me! Slots websites that bury games behind cluttered lobbies lose points regardless of their library size. I time the registration process, test search and game filtering, and assess whether finding a specific slot takes seconds or minutes.
